THE SURROUNDING

From the West to the East and half an hour by car, we arrive to the towns of Zumaia, Getaria, Zarautz, Aia and Orio, each one different from the others and with its own personality, that make up Urola Costa region in the gipuzkoan Basque Coast. This swath of territory situated between the mouth of Urola river in Zumaia and the mouth of Oria river in Orio (the very southernmost point of Cantabric sea), remains crossed by the Way of Santiago and is charaterized by his intensity and diversity of offer, being difficult emphasize a few attractions on others. The culture, the landscape, the nature, the gastronomy and the leisure converge generating a whole that will captivate you.

Being one of the most visited localities of the zone, Zarautz has a wide range of activities to enjoy both the town and its surroundings. We suggest to visit the Historic Centre of Zarautz, Orio, Getaria and Zumaia (Catalogued as Cultural Gods with the category of Monumental Site), to visit the museums of Zarautz and Zumaia, to visit the centre of interpretation of the Way of Santiago in Orio, to visit the complex of the ironmongomery of Agorregi in Aia and Cristobal Baslenciaga´s Museum in Getaria, for example…and if you complete the trip with a visit to the main cities (Donostia-San Sebastian, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Pamplona) the cultural journey turns out very complex and varied.

The six beaches located in this region, different between them for the size and the context, will afford you to rest, to walk or practise sports as the surf. In the same way, you will enjoy the landscape and the nature thanks to the walks and routes for diverse paths in an enviroment favoured by its biodiversity.

In addition to the protected Biotopo in Zarautz, with its dunes, marismes and cliffs, you will enjoy the singular landscape generated by the Flysch of the geopark in Zumaia with its centre of interpretation, the natural park of Pagoeta in Aia and Zarautz and the protected watercourses in the Urola and Oria rivers.

As for the gastronomy, in addition to the tradicional “pintxopote” which invites to join to the enviroment that is created in the town, you could taste a good grilled fish with the local wine txakoli in Getaria, as well as a large variety of plates of great quality and exquisiteness in the different spits and restaurants that the surroundings offer.
